Born and raised in London, Harry Christelis has become an established name on the UK improvised music scene. Recognised as a guitarist with a unique and impressionistic sound, he fuses his deep knowledge of jazz and folk traditions with electronic and ambient musics.
While studying Jazz at Middlesex University, Harry was able to focus on his craft with help from some of the biggest names on the European music scene. Invaluable tutoring from the likes of Stuart Hall, Chris Montague, Nikki Iles, and Chris Batchelor was a huge step in his path to becoming a distinctive player and composer in his own right. Furthermore, this time also thrust him into the centre of a thriving music scene where he has built countless friendships and working relationships with musicians from many different backgrounds that have shaped his career.
Harry has established himself as a musician with a delicate and understated approach, with clear nods to his musical heroes like Jakob Bro, Bill Frisell, The Beatles, Connan Mockasin, Talk Talk, Miles Davis, Paul Motian, and many more. All these influences have helped him sculpt a sound that is able to elevate the bands he works with in all kinds of musical traditions; traditions such as jazz, folk, rock, and electronic. Harry’s own projects are a seamless blend of these influences, and showcase his ever growing repertoire of original compositions as vehicles explore a mixture of standard like playing with free improvisation, and jazz & folk harmony. He has three albums out as a bandleader and composer, 'Moostak Trio’ (2020) and ‘Scribbling’ (Ubuntu, 2022), and ‘Nurture The Child / Challenge The Adult’, all of which have been met with widespread critical acclaim internationally.
Groups and musicians he has performed with include: Harry Christelis Trio/Quartet, Pedro Velasco, Teotima, Georgia Duncan, The Magic Lantern, Strangelove, Bukky Leo, FUR, Dizraeli, Jakaboski, Leo Richardson, Mike Gorman, Andrea Di Biase, Dave Storey, and many more. Just a few of the venues that he has played include: Ronnie Scott’s, The Vortex, Wilton's Music Hall, Nell's Jazz and Blues Club, Hootananny's, and Glastonbury festival.
